1960 Les Paul Custom into 59 Standard
In this thread, a luthier with extraordinary skill and experience takes a one of a kind 1960 Les Paul Custom and converts it into a 1959 Les Paul Standard. The finished product is convincing, but polarizing. Some readers may think the end product is justification enough. Others, that the result was not worth the obliteration of the former guitar, or a Les Paul Special from the same era, which was used in the conversion. Others may already have tired from my long introduction and are looking at cat videos on YouTube.

Oh to have those skills. I think if I did I'd convert a Greco or some such (as anybody who buys The Guitar Magazine will have followed someone do). Great outcome just the same.

Hurrrr.... couldn't bring myself to do that. When a guitar is that old it's kinda sacred... Idk

The band of maple filler around the binding just stabs me in the eye. Like his solution to the thin neck though.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

I'm in the haters camp. The original Custom was stunning, the conversion while I'm sure a great guitar, doesn't have the same charm. Should have kept the original and bought a R9!

There was a thread on Facebook a while ago where a guy bought his 'grail' - a really nicely aged 67 Jag... Then routed it to fit humbuckers. That seemed pretty dumb to me.

Some of you think that the destruction of the 1960 Custom was unwarranted.
Surely this can be made good again. Simply buy an original '59 and rout it for 3 pickups and double bindings and remake the Custom. Then everyone is happy.

Mad skills and a beautiful result but what a lot of work. Think I'd have just sprayed it black and found a gold top to convert.

The original was messed with anyways, I think the final product is way better!!

Yeah that is my take too, it had already been messed with so he didn't ruin the originality of the guitar. Not historically significant, beyond its year of manufacture.jeremyb wrote:The original was messed with anyways, I think the final product is way better!!

Re: 1960 Les Paul Custom into 59 Standard
As I understand it:
It was a genuine '60 Custom that had been refinished.
It is now a fake replica of a '59 burst. With a plug in the middle that sticks out like dogs balls.
The custom was sacrificed for nothing more than aesthetic preference so the owner can play their fake and pretend to themselves they have an almost burst.
Asshat.
/peroni then absolut then chivas if you must know

Not just a refine though, pickup routing and neck were also changed previously.
