Black Label Society - Mafia

Post by Tsuken »

Two words: Buy. It. 8)

For anyone who doesn't know, Black Label Society is Zakk Wylde's band when he's not playing with Ozzy. He writes it all, sings, and plays whatever the hell he feels like. I've been thinking of getting some BLS for quite a while now, and finally got around to ordering an album. I chose the latest album: Mafia.

It arrived from Amazon yesterday. Within minutes I had a bad case of whiplash. I was completely incapable of doing anything but violently banging my head while throwing my fist in the air (fortunately the neighbours can't see into the sitting room, or I would have looked decidedly odd).

To me it sounds kind of "Sabbath in Chains"; a mix of old Black Sabbath (Ozzy era, funnily enough), and Alice in Chains - especially the album "Dirt". A nurse at work today thought he detected a bit of a Dio influence, and at times I can see what he means. It's very heavy, with some absolutely monster guitar playing. Zakk's vocal's are very reminiscent (no surprise) of Ozzy and Layne Staley from Alice in Chains, but more gritty - at least more gritty than Ozzy.

....pause .... bang head some more .........

Seriously, if you like guitar rock, you should do yourself a favour, and check out BLS. Mafia is definitely a good album to begin with. Zakk is a monster 8)

Does he play an Ovation?
He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

Dude I have always like BLS. The Blessed Hell Ride is a wicked album, it's a great cross between metal and hard rock. Also Hangover music volume VI has some wicked songs and amazing riffs. Especially the song with the crazy tapping run on a nylon string acoustic.... :?

Will be getting the new album soon, will give a run down when i comes. :)

Mafia's the new album. It rules. It hasn't been out of my wife's car stereo since I burnt her a copy. 8) I got a Judas Priest compilation at the same time, so I'm alternating between the two, but I've not listened to much else since I got it. 8)

(and I'm not kidding when i say I got a sore neck within the first two songs when I first listened to it 8) )

Actually it doesn't; and only the live version of Victim of Changes; and nothing else from Sad Wings of Destiny :( I'll be buying that album anyway though - cos it's absolutely awesome, and the first Priest I ever heard - so that's ok.

:? What best of did you get? There are a few I think. I got Metal Works 73-93, as it seemed to have the best range - including Hell Bent For Leather 8) I still have to get Sad Wings of Destiny though - love that entire album.
