Post by god himself »

or any combination of?
What do you guys think?

I play classic/hard rock/metal a bit of grunty distortion.

I'm not a fan of that Gibson setup, so I'd say the SDs. However I find the JB a bit hyped and honky sounding in the warmer sounding guitars I prefer, so I'd suggest a Custom 5 / Jazz combo.

I love the JB, Jazz combo. You'd basically never use the neck pickup anyway so it's kind of irrelevant but the Jazz is nice. The JB is a good rock/metal pickup if you want some semblance of tone when you're not using face melting distortion.

What's the guitar they're going in? I've found the Gibson high output set to be a bit limited (but still good for things like classic rock/metal) when in all mahogany things like their Vs, but pretty good for an LP setup.

Is that Randy Rhoads we're talking about here? I don't think he used a Jazz, I'm pretty sure it was something more towards a PAF with a Super Distortion in the bridge.

And at any rate... I love Randy's playing but his tone was... not particularly impressive at the best of times. Very buzzy in my opinion.

its often reported as a paf or 59 but from mr jackson himself in my old guitar player from the 80`s he states a jazz and a distortion
in the concord obviously
he used a neck from a danelectro on the polker dot Vee

Amen. If its a LP, the Custom 5 is great. It like a mid-heavy guitar best.

Its an explorer, I was attracted to the Gibson ones primarily because they have such a huge output.

keep it clean, just in case... you can't clean a dirty pickup... tones in the fingers anyway so get an SD JB, I guarentee you won't sound just like the other 100,000 users ;)
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Randy had a duncan distortion and duncan jazz in his white jackson and a dimarzio distortion plus and dimarzio PAF in his polka dot V.....and the danelectro neck was used on the polka dot V (built by karl sandoval)

I'd go with what hotgrits and ash have said for your guitar......or as another option a bill lawrence 500xl in the bridge, you can get some real heavy tones and some classic rock tones
