Beatles influences
What bands have really nailed the Beatles. I mean the mid to late 60s imperial period, not the jangly, fresh faced, pot free early period. To qualify, there has to be major songwriting chops, vocal harmonies, strings and even a bit of psychaedelica.
Always first on the list has to be Jeff Lynn's ELO. Almost any ELO single would have done. Here's Mr Blue Sky. In 1975, John Lennon said his favourite song was Showdown, so he was a fan.

Synth poppers Tears for Fears fearlessly nailed the vibe with this swirling psychaedelic 6 minute monster, Sowing the Seeds of Love. It took them 3 years to produce. The Beatles knocked out puppies like this in a few days, time after time.

Dripping with late period Beatles feel, Whatever is not Gallagher's best written song which is Live Forever, but a solid homage to the fab five when you include George Martin. Oasis have been criticised for the inevitability of their chord changes, but here the tense middle 8 (2:10) comes out of nowhere.

Lenny Kravitz shows his class with this Beatles-esque number off his first album. Instead of strings, horns.

World Party drew deeply from the Beatles well with She's the One. Later covered by Robbie Williams, finally songwriter Karl Wallinger made some money.

How many of you have heard this one by Chris Bell after Big Star ended? If the fab four had done I am the Cosmos and put it on Abbey Road, no one would have blinked an eyelid.

Are there Beatles fanboys out there some comparisons they want to share?

Re: Beatles influences
We've ripped off the Beatles, but I don't think that's what you're meaning
Will go have a listen through those links of interest however, there's a couple I'm not familiar with

Re: Beatles influences
As odd as it may sound, I really pick up a lot of Beatles influence when I listen to Kula Shaker. Definitely not as obvious as Oasis or Noel Gallagher, but present nonetheless in many of their tracks. Below is the first track that came to mind

Re: Beatles influences
To that fine list I would offer the following
Freiheit - Keeping The Dream Alive

Crowded House - Not the Girl You Think You Are

I climbed on the back of a giant albatross which flew through a crack in the cloud to a place where happiness reigned all year round and music played ever so loudly

Re: Beatles influences
Great thread mate
I always thought that The Seahorses has a bit of that vibe
John Squire is a top class guitarist and you could probably here a bit of Beatles in the stone rose too
Just on a side note
Saw the Paul McCartney Caroke and I though it was done really well and felt quite moved
Even tho sometimes McCartney comes across as a bit look at me la di daa in the past you cant deny the caliber of the songs him and the Beatles wrote
Unbelievable really

Re: Beatles influences
Cool thread. I think the strings requirement is stretching it a bit though! Here's a few more left field suggestions:
Demob Happy - Be Your Man
Super Furry Animals - Herman Loves Pauline
Uncle Acid - I'll Cut You Down
Ok, Uncle Acid might be pushing it... I feel they have a Helter Skelter kind of vibe, but minimal harmonies and definitely no strings.

Re: Beatles influences
Not sure. Most bands I would guess have some influence from them. I like that song I am A Walrus.

When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.
