NAD • 2012 Vox AC30C2X
Picked this up earlier today, going to replace the tubes with some NOS Russian EL84's as they're all currently Chinese ones
Sounds great

The Russian ones will handle more vodka spills.
Taste tested half a dozen sets of '84s in that old grey panel AC30 I had for a couple of years. The winners were the Sovteks.
I didn't expect that.

Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Using NOS tubes in AC30 is bit of a waste, they would be better put to use in a Hi-Fi amp where they will last for years. They will get a hard time in an AC30, those Chinese tubes are bloody good. The EHX (Sovteks) and JJ EL84's both sound great in AC30's.

I had some NOS PhilIps I put in my JMI AC30 and they got wasted after about 12 hours. $200 down the loo.

I used these in the past too, very well built tube if you want reliability, they are NOS but there are plenty of them about. Wouldn't say they sounded any better than the EHX or JJ though.

Was that the $650?

Think there was an AC30 last week that went for $650, but that one didn't have the Alnico Blues in it. I got this one for $750, which is not bad at all considering they're $2,299 newTmcB wrote:Was that the $650?

Re: NAD • 2012 Vox AC30C2X
Funny, I was just reading up about them because the guy I get my valves from mentioned it. No, these ones just have your standard 12AX7's (saying that I've put a nice 12AT7 into V1) and I am led to believe they're not interchangeable. Dan talks a bit about them hereMolly wrote:Dibs, Jim!
Do these recent ACs have a EF86?
Oh and dibs noted... but you'll be waiting a very long time. Famous last words those

Re: NAD • 2012 Vox AC30C2X
That is a great price.
Although a 12AT7 will work in a 12AX7 position the valves characteristics are quite different, I find they take all the sparkle out of an amp if used as a direct replacement in a 12AX7 slot.
A TungSol re-issue in V1 usually works really well in most amps. V2 in the AC30 is cathode follower so I would only use a Chinese or JJ valve in that position if you want it to last more than a few hours.
