Guitar Repaint Disaster. Need help.

Post by dayl »

Man I need some good advice on this one.

Been fixing a cousins old Epi LP. It has a lot of sentimental value. It's been with me for a while.

We have a painting department at our work and I get along with the head painter and he offered to recoat it for me.

Today he came to me a said the base was finished and the first couple hits of gloss were done and he just wanted to do a few touch ups and a coue more gloss coats and we're sweet.

So we went to check it out..... and here's the problem.....

He didn't mask off the fretboard and was really happy with the way the gloss brought out the grain...

Haha... he doesn't know anything about guitars and I'm so used to it all that I didn't give it a thought, so it's an innocent mistake on his part.

So....how am I going to get this shit off?
I need this gat to be sent away for Christmas and ti.e is running out.

Pics when I get the guitar back haha

It was good enough for Fender, Ricky, Gibson...

I say leave it! Especially if it's thick poly or something. You'll never get it off without a level of destruction, along with about a week of your precious time.

Had exactly the same issue when a mate organised a couple of clear coat jobs
You don't think to ask to mask the fretboard off
A couple of hours with a razor blade sorted it

Linbide scraper is a heavy duty tool. Using one on a guitar might be a source of great misery.

Fretboard was fine after, normal Stanley knife blade is all that's required - Linbide would be way overkill
Scrape the edges first so you don't lift the lacquer on the side of the neck

Thanks for the like - it's kinda my signature shape

How about some 800 grit to knock the shine off?

Been considering these sorts of options. The guy has been waiting to get his guitar back for so long that I just want it to be perfect. So I'm a little extra freaked on this one.

Honestly I see a lot of luthier clips on the tooob scraping superglue and other such things off fretboards with a razor blade so I’m sure clear coat will come back fine. Just might take hours
